Overview

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that occurs anywhere along the urinary tract, which includes the bladder, kidneys, ureters (the tubes that take urine from the kidneys to the bladder), and urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). For some women, urinary tract infections can bring uncomfortable symptoms lasting days at a time, and may be a recurrent problem indicating the risk of more serious infections. If you've had more than two UTIs in one year, we encourage you to consult with Frisco, TX (and surrounding areas Plano, Allen & McKinney) urogynecologist, Dr. Aimee Nguyen. A thorough examination, diagnosis and treatment plan will be provided so that your gynecological health can be restored.

  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • The inability to urinate despite the urge
  • Pain during urination
  • Cloudy urine, or blood in the urine
  • Pelvic pressure
  • Severe pelvic cramping and bloating
  • Low grade fever

Causes

Several causes exist for UTIs including:

Treatment

Urinary tract infections are usually treated with antibiotics. Recurrent UTIs are usually treated with a long-term, preventative low dose of antibiotics. • Consistent hydration
  • Urinating before and after sexual intercourse
  • Avoiding the use of diaphragms and spermicides
  • Avoiding the use of feminine sprays, douches, or powders

Recurrent UTI FAQs

Does Cranberry Juice Help?

There are scientific studies that support the use of cranberry tablets or juice to help prevent UTIs. However, when one has symptoms of burning with urination with the onset of a UTI, it is best to avoid all things acidic ie., cranberry juice/caffeine/fruits/spicy foods. Consumption of these items may only make the burning sensation worse. It is best to clear out a UTI by drinking purely water and avoiding all dietary bladder irritants.

Complications of UTIs?

If left untreated, urinary tract infections can lead to more serious complications, such as a kidney infection or sepsis. Women who have chronic UTIs are at an increased risk for a premature delivery and babies with low birth weight. Anyone who has more than three UTIs in one year should speak to a doctor for diagnosis and treatment.

UTI or Yeast Infection?

The two most common problems specific to females are urinary tract infections and yeast infections. Both infections include itching, burning, and pain in the vaginal area as symptoms. A UTI will cause a frequent urge to urinate, but a yeast infection causes a discharge. If you are unsure, Dr. Nguyen can diagnosis and treat either condition.
